When was the first speed awareness course introduced in this country as an alternative to points/ fine and where?

The first Speed Awareness Courses started to emerge as local courses in various parts of the UK in early 2006. They were very limited and diverse with little evidential research behind them.
The current National Speed Awareness Course emerged from the National Driver Improvement Course and developed based upon the existing practice that took place at that time, following the Department of Transport Report of 2006 ” Effective Interventions for ┬áSpeeding Motorists” by the NDORS Strategic Course Development Group.
